Not to forget – living in freedom
Tonight is Remembrance Day.
When I look at my little son, I realize that he will grow up without people close by who experienced the war themselves. He will not have a grandmother who has a diary from that time to read and vividly recounts the experiences she had as a nurse on the front lines, like I did. But I have every confidence that together we will keep the memory alive.

What do you think about that?
Living without oppression is living in freedom. But is this really true? Can’t you also be free during oppression? Or can someone feel trapped without being oppressed? I think both are possible. Many people, for example, feel bound by burdens, such as financial worries or a greater responsibility than they can bear.

This year I read an impressive book on this subject. In this book, ‘The Choice: Living in Freedom’, it tells the story of Dr. Edith Eger, that was overshadowed in her teenage years by the horrors of the Holocaust.
She describes openly what has happened to her, even the most terrible things imaginable. No matter how difficult her situation is, she picks herself up time and again and carries on. She chooses life. She realizes that although she may be physically completely dependent and battered, she always has the choice to be free in her mind. When she eventually finds herself on the brink of death and liberation occurs but she is too weak to give a sign of life, she saves herself by imagining herself dancing. Evoking her passion and love allows her to make the movement so that she is seen.
Edith teaches us that hope can be found in every situation and that that hope gives us the courage and strength to carry on.
You always have a choice to choose freedom, no matter how difficult or entangled your situation is. This requires a great deal of courage and awareness. For to break free from your fear, you will have to fully face it and dare to ask for help if you cannot do it alone.
Which choice will you make?
